Reformation in Eickeloh
Was Martin Luther ever in Eickeloh? Probably not. He didn't travel that far north. But the Reformation took hold here relatively early. In 1528, Pastor Henning Kelp introduced it in Walsrode, much to the chagrin of the abbess there, who feared for the future of her convent. Nevertheless, the Protestant faith spread, including to Eickeloh. The visitation report of 1543 mentions Hinrich Veltman as the first Lutheran pastor by name in the area.
From around 1700, the pastors and their families lived in the house at "Am Pfarrhof 1," the present-day parish hall. Built as a typical large Lower Saxon hall house in half-timbered construction (today one of the oldest houses in the village), it featured stables and living quarters close together, with people and animals living under one roof. After the last renovation, the former stables were converted into the large parish hall, where the exhibition is now being held. Reformation – the church is changing!
